Least Convincing Advertising: The Fake Real Person.
There’s no single winner in this category. It’s a tie
among several dozen ads running at any given time.
I’m referring to the fake real person. This is a pet peeve of mine. You
know, the obvious actor who looks at the camera sincerely and tells his or
her personal story. We’re supposed to believe this beautiful woman used to
look like a dog left out in the rain. But now, with her new shampoo, her
life is worth living again. She looks just like, well, a model.
Who in this world believes that’s a real person speaking? Half the time, we
recognize the actor from a TV show or, worse, another commercial.
Of course, there’s nothing wrong with using actors in commercials. But when
advertisers ask us to believe something when we clearly know better, then
they are simply insulting our intelligence.
Just like most of the shows they’re interrupting, but that’s another story. |
